The Pacific

most of today was spent sitting on the rocks of Lima's pacific coast. i was picking out rocks for friends. i saw a rock that was red surrounded by purple ones and i thought of Hanan. i took the rock and put it in a sock for her. when i was in oaxaca, i collected sand and dirt for her, and i didn't have anywhere to put it, so i put it in my sock! today when i saw the rock and then the stray sock in my bag (not sure why it was there), it just made sense. then i was thinking about Ianna and how she said she'd travel half way around the world just to see someone for half an hour. i thought to myself, I'd do the same. And maybe i kind of already have - if a three hour chinatown bus to philadelphia for a quick dinner with friends counts as half way around the world.

ereek's family have taken bryan and i in like their own, no questions asked. they greeted me with the most incredible warmth, and were truly happy and excited to see me. i have a second home here in lima, and it feels really good. ereek's sisters and parents are so beautiful and giving and i feel so thankful.

i met up with zafa today - we talked politics, anarchism, life. he inspires me, even if he has some machismo issues. this trip has been a lot of testosterone. so when i met up with carla today, from the collective contra naturas, it was a huge breath of fresh air. a queer woman in lima, part of a queer collective. we talked about the collective, the state of organizing in lima, in peru, as a queer woman. most of her folks from the collective are at the world social forum in brasil now.
tomorrow i am meeting up with another friend - mauricio, and then we head to cuzco via aeroplano to meet up with april! i was in a women's collective with april when i was younger, i am excited to spend time with her.

oh, also! i wrote a poem about celia cruz, inspired by a long bus ride's movie selection: a live concert to commemorate celia's life. sure, she isn't perfect, but god do i love that woman. and i really like my poem, too.
